Youth musicians from Guangzhou and Hong Kong perform Symphonic Band Gala

Six symphonic bands from Guangzhou and three local bands with some 700 talented young wind instrumentalists will perform a number of popular and light classics, including "Glittering Days", "Ode to Joy" and "Selections from Carmen Suite" in the free concert "Celebration of the 10th Anniversary of the Establishment of HKSAR - Symphonic Band Gala by Youth Musicians of Guangzhou and Hong Kong".

Jointly organised by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department and the Government News Office of Guangzhou, the Symphonic Band Gala will be held from 3pm to 6.30pm next Friday (August 17) at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Piazza. Admission is free.

Programme highlights are Luo Da-you's "Glittering Days", the delightful "The Sound of Music" and "Auld Lang Syne", Lang's "Italian Fiesta", Beethoven's "Ode to Joy", Bizet's "Selections from Carmen Suite" and "Farandole, from L'Arlesienne Suite No 2".

The local performing troupes include the highly acclaimed Hong Kong Symphonic Winds, and award-winning groups Po Leung Kuk No 1 W.H. Cheung College Symphonic Band and Ying Wa College Band.

The bands from Guangzhou are the Dong Chuan Road Primary School Band, which is well-known for its outstanding performances in Guangdong province; Hualian University Symphonic Band which has won a number of prizes in various competitions, South China Agricultural University Band who has performed in many cultural exchange activities, Nan Hai Guei Cheng Symphonic Band whose members are composed of various classes of the population, Guangdong Police College Band which is formed by the current students of the Police College and Yucai Middle School Band which competes and performs frequently.
