Nuevo Ballet Espanol gives flamenco production new dimension
Nuevo Ballet Espanol, from Spain, will be in Hong Kong next month (September) to perform the new production "Flamenco Directo", a fusion of flamenco with new dimension and tradition.
"Exciting new company with great dancers and an original interpretation of flamenco adds a new dimension without betraying its tradition." - Critical Dance.com
The troupe was awarded "Premier Up" for The Best Dance Company of Spanish Dance and Flamenco Award in 2000. With a vision of mixing contemporary dance with flamenco traditions, Nuevo Ballet Espanol examined the possibilities for a new style of dance. ˆWngel Rojas and Carlos Rodrˆqguez, innovators of modern flamenco, formed the company in 1995. They evolved Spanish traditional flamenco into new flamenco by adding a 21st century pop sensibility into their productions.
The company has produced 10 shows including "Infinito" (1995), "Canela y Fuego" (1996), "Fury" (2001), and "Romeo y Julieta" (2003). With a view to bringing modern flamenco to a wider international audience, the company toured extensively throughout Spain, Europe and South America for the last 10 years and has become the hottest dance sensation on the Spanish cultural scene.
Angel Rojas and Carlos Rodrˆqguez are in the vanguard of modern Spanish dance. They shared the Best Dancer Award at the Spanish Annual Dance and Flamenco Choreography Awards in 1994. Over the years, they have participated in many international festivals. Their choreographies are now being performed by other companies. In 2000 they won the awards for Outstanding Dancers and Best Spanish Dance Company at the Jerez DDOO awards.
