42 Schools Commended for Meritorious Green Projects
***********************************************

Forty-two primary and secondary schools and kindergartens were commended today (April 8) at the prize presentation ceremony of the Greening School Project Award in recognition of their meritorious green school projects and their contribution to the Green Hong Kong Campaign.

To promote green consciousness among students, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department's Greening School Subsidy Scheme provides cash subsidies to schools to plant more trees and shrubs in campuses and to organise more greening activities, through which students' interests and knowledge of greening can be enhanced. Awards are given to meritorious green school projects.

The number of schools participating in the Greening School Subsidy Scheme has doubled since its introduction in 2000.

Speaking at the prize presentation ceremony, a member of the Community Involvement Committee in Greening of Home Affairs Bureau, Dr Katherine Yau, said the scheme had been well received by teachers and students since its launch, with the number of participating schools increasing steadily, rising from around 300 in the first year to some 740 this year.

"The standard of green projects is on the rise. Teachers and students are working very hard to make their schools' environment greener and more beautiful," she said.

Other officiating guests at the ceremony included the Principal Education Officer of Education and Manpower Bureau, Mrs Ruth Lau, and the Chief Leisure Manager (Green Campaign) of Leisure and Cultural Services Department, Ms Florence Tsui.
