November
Enjoy the cheer of Cantonese Opera Day
**************************************

"Cantonese Opera Day 2005" will be held at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre on November 27, featuring an array of free programmes including the opening ceremony, Nanyin narrative singing and various Cantonese opera performances. Other attractions include autograph sessions by famous Cantonese opera stars, game stalls for make up, costume try-outs and mask painting of characters in traditional Cantonese Opera.

There is also a ticketed programme "Excerpts by Famous Stars in Cantonese Opera" on opera day. Popular opera actors will showcase some familiar repertoire at 1.30pm and 3.30pm at the Grand Theatre.

Other programmes in "Bravo! A Cantonese Opera Fiesta!" are "An Incident at Tongque Tower" (November 22 -27), "Nanning Cantonese Opera Troupe of Guangxi" (November 28 and 29), "Monk Biancai Releases the Evil Spirit" (December 17, 19 and 20) and "One Wife Is Good, But Two Is Better" (December 18 and 21).

The cultural departments of Guangdong, Macau and Hong Kong designated the last Sunday of every November as "Cantonese Opera Day" to promote the development of the valuable vernacular art of Cantonese Opera. By holding this territory-wide activity on a regular basis, it is hoped to build a broader audience base to hold the torch for the genre for future generations.

For the last two years, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department has organised the event to critical acclaim with thousands of people participating in a variety of programmes in the city. Last year, the department staged the day with other relevant performances in November and December in a series named "Bravo! A Cantonese Opera Fiesta!".

Tickets for the programmes in "Bravo! A Cantonese Opera Fiesta!" are now available at URBTIX outlets. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients (limited tickets for students and CSSA recipients on a first-come, first-served basis). A 10% discount applies to Friends of LCSD performing venues.

For enquiries about the programmes, call 2268 7323 or visit http://www.lcsd.gov.hk/cp . Ticketing enquiries and reservations can be made on 2734 9009 and credit card telephone bookings on 2111 5999. A special discount scheme is available for "Excerpts by Famous Stars in Cantonese Opera". Please refer to the programme leaflet for details.
