Dance drama "The Red Lovers" to be staged in HK
The dance drama, "The Red Lovers", by the Guangdong Song and Dance Theatre from Guangzhou will be staged in Hong Kong next month.
The work, presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, tells the tragic story of two lovers who sacrifice their lives for the communist revolution. It has received numerous awards and prizes on the Mainland.
Prizes include the Wenhua Grand Award, as well as Choreography, Music, Performance (for both the leading male and female dancers), and Stage Design Awards at the 11th Wenhua Awards; Grand Award at the 3rd National Dance Drama Performance Competition; Audience's Favourite Dance Drama and Dancers Award at the 7th China Arts Festival; and Seven Class One Awards at the 8th Guangdong Arts Festival.
This is the true story of two young people who sacrificed their lives for their political ideals. The drama is set against a backdrop of the 1927 Guangzhou Uprising of the Chinese Communist Party. A young lady, by the name of Chen Tiejun, who was born into a wealthy family in Guangzhou, refuses to accept an arranged marriage and leaves home to join the revolution. She meets a young man, Zhou Wenyong, a revolutionary with vision and ideals. The two soon grow close. They set up an underground agency in Guangzhou to prepare for the Guangzhou Uprising to establish the Communist government.
The uprising fails and the two are arrested. When they are taken to the execution ground, just moments before their death, the two announce that they will be married before they die. This becomes the famous "Wedding on the Execution Ground" in contemporary Chinese history.
