Hong Kong Youth Symphonic Band to perform with soloists and trumpet

Symphony No.1 "The Lord of the Rings", "Fantaisie Brilliante sur Carmen", "Mouthpiece Mania"... a series of colourful music will be performed during the Hong Kong Youth Symphonic Band’s annual concert at 8pm on July 9 (Saturday) at the Concert Hall of the Hong Kong City Hall.

Under the baton of Pak Wing-heng, Keung Fan-hau and Stephen Lam, members of the Hong Kong Youth Symphonic Band will share the results of the Music Office’s training.

The programme highlight is "Gandalf", the first movement from Symphony No.1 "The Lord of the Rings". It is a musical portrait of the wizard Gandalf, one of the principal characters of the trilogy, illustrating his wisdom and noble personality.

Featuring trumpet players playing only with the mouthpieces, "Mouthpiece Mania" will present tunes from the classics in a totally different tone colour and with innovative playing techniques.

Flute soloist Stephen Lam, percussion soloists Choy Lap-tak and Choi Suk-fan will be invited to join the concert. Mr Lam will present the masterpiece "Fantaisie Brilliante sur Carmen" with the band while Mr Choy and Miss Choi will join the performance of "Concerto for Percussion and Band".

The programme also includes the Chinese folk tune "Purple Bamboo Tune", "Pines of the Appian Way" from Respighi's tone poem "Pines of Rome", famous Rock'n Roll "Rock Around the Clock" and Broadway music "Curtain Up! A Theatre Overture for Winds".

The 70-member Hong Kong Youth Symphonic Band was formed in 1978 to provide advanced orchestral training for Music Office trainees and talented local young players. The band has made a number of concert tours overseas. It has also successfully nurtured several generations of young musicians, creating a wider interest in and reception of band music in Hong Kong.

The "Hong Kong Youth Symphonic Band Annual Concert" is organised by the Music Office of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department.

Tickets priced at $60 and $40 are now available at all URBTIX outlets. Half-price concessions are available to senior citizens, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients.
