Director Sun brought new techniques that helped propel Chinese cinema into the first Golden Age. His films are full of conviction, romantic lyricism, humour and youthful passion that won him applause and the name, "Poet of the Cinema".

Legendary actress, Ruan Lingyu gives a great performance as a young woman into an old lady in "The Little One" (1933). In "Wild Rose" (1932), Sun explores the theme of the innocence of the countryside against the corrupt city. Actress Li Lili became an instant sensation after her debut in "Revenge by the Volcano" (1932). She then played a tailor-made sports celebrity in "The Queen of Sport" (1934).

Despite being denounced in 1951, Sun shot "Brave the Wind and Waves" in 1957 with youthful passion.

"Early Sights of Guangdong & Hong Kong" and "Revenge by the Volcano" are silent films with English subtitles. "Brave the Wind and Waves" is in Putonghua with English subtitles. "The Red Robe" is in Cantonese and other Sun Yu's films are silent with no subtitles.
