Seminar to look at societal change in Pearl River Delta

Hong Kong and Guangzhou are closely linked in culture and everyday life and rapid growth of the Pearl River Delta has brought about changes.

Scholars and artists from Guangzhou and Hong Kong will share cross-cultural views at the seminar, "Pearl River Delta: Humanities & Sociological Perspective", to be held at 4.30pm on Sunday (May 15) at the Cinema of the Hong Kong Film Archive (HKFA).

They will share with the audience their views on the architectural changes, land use and sociological impacts caused by the rapid growth in the Pearl River Delta.

The speakers include Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Mass Communication at Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou Mr Yang Xiaoyan, Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Artistic Design of the same university Mr Feng Yuan, Assistant Professor of the School of Design at Hong Kong Polytechnic University Mr Laurent Gutierrez, Adjunct Assistant Professor of the Department of Architecture at Hong Kong University Ms Valerie Portefaix and Programmer of the HKFA Mr Law Kar. The seminar will be conducted in Cantonese and English with visual aids. Admission is free.

The seminar is part of the activities of HKFA's special programme, "Pearl River Delta: Movie.Culture.Life", in celebration of the centennial of Chinese Cinema.

From now until mid-June, various films from 1898 to 2004 and a free multi-media exhibition with a related publication, "The Hong Kong-Guangdong Film Connection", will showcase the land, folkloric traditions and lifestyle of the Pearl River Delta.
