Greening School Subsidy Scheme invites application

Greening is fun! To promote green consciousness among students, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department provides subsidies to schools each year through the "Greening School Subsidy Scheme" for planting of more trees and flowers in campuses.

Since its launch in 2000, the scheme had been well received by teachers and students, with the number of participating schools growing from around 300 in the first year to some 700 in 2004.

The coming "Greening School Subsidy Scheme" is now inviting applications, and the closing date is on May 14, 2005.

Greening school projects may be in the form of:

* Tree planting: The trees should be planted on the ground. With a minimum size of 2.5m in height and the trunk be no less than 50 mm diameter at breast height. Works may include the digging of tree pit on paved area, while care should be taken to ensure that there are no public utilities or cables underneath affected.

* Garden plot/Horticultural maintenance: The plants should be grown in garden plot without containers and the plants should mainly be perennials.

* Greening activity: Schools can organise greening related activities such as competitions and seminars.

All local registered secondary, primary, special schools and kindergartens are welcome to apply. In case of over-subscription, priority will be given to schools which have never participated in the scheme.
