Thousands trained in district sports scheme
*******************************************

The District Sports Teams Training Scheme, launched by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department in 2000, has provided intensive training and competition opportunities to 17,000 young athletes in badminton, basketball, table tennis and football and is set to nurture more new blood for Hong Kong's sports scene in the next five years.

Badminton, basketball, table tennis and football teams were formed and trained under the scheme in 18 districts with the help of the relevant National Sports Associations, and inter-district tournaments organised for these teams.

Speaking at the Grand Prize Presentation Ceremony of District Sports Teams Competitions at Shek Kip Mei Park Sports Centre today (March 13), the Deputy Director of Leisure and Cultural Services (Leisure Services), Mr Alan Siu said:"So far, more than 100 basketball players from the District Teams have been selected to join the Hong Kong Basketball Association's junior squad and represent Hong Kong in matches with overseas teams.

"And the Kwai Tsing and Tai Po Football Teams, champion and first runner-up in the 2003/04 Inter-district Football Competition, have both played well in the Hong Kong Football Third Division League and risen to the Second Division this year.

"The scheme attracted over 4,000 participants this year, evidence of the interest in sports it has generated at the district level."

Prizes were presented today to the champion teams in the 2004/05 inter-district competitions in badminton, basketball and table tennis.

After the prize presentation ceremony, Mr Alan Siu, together with the Vice President of Hong Kong Basketball Association, Mr Hung Kin-chuk; the Honorary Legal Advisor of Hong Kong Table Tennis Association, Mr Bernard Yuen; and the Honorary Secretary of Hong Kong Badminton Association, Mr Chau Yat-kwong, lighted a torch to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the District Sports Training Scheme.
