195,000 books sold in Book Sale Campaign

The Sale of Donated Books, which was held during this weekend (February 26 and 27), attracted over 25,000 people with more than 195,000 books sold.

The number of participants and books sold have both increased as compared with last year. About 21,000 people participated and 160,000 books were sold last year.

A spokesman for the Leisure and Cultural Services Department pointed out that the success of the campaign owed to the concerted efforts of the various organisations and the volunteers’ participation. Over 1,200 sections of volunteer service were contributed in this year’s campaign.

The Book Donation and Sale Campaign is jointly organised by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, Home Affairs Department, 18 District Councils, Hong Kong Housing Authority, Hongkong Post, The Community Chest of Hong Kong and the Agency of Volunteer Service with an aim to promote reading, book recycling and help the needy.

More than 220,000 books were collected this year and were on sale at $5 each. All proceeds will be donated to The Community Chest of Hong Kong.

Ends/Sunday, February 27, 2005
