Charity sale of donated books today and tomorrow
A variety of books donated by the public are on charity sale today and tomorrow (February 26 and 27) at three different locations in Hong Kong, Kowloon and New Territories to support the Book Donation and Sale Campaign.
Speaking today (February 26) at the Book Donation and Sale Campaign launch ceremony at the HKCL, the Director of Leisure and Cultural Services, Ms Anissa Wong said that more than 220,000 books had been donated by people since the launch of the book collections campaign in January.
"The public's response to the Campaign has been very encouraging in the past few years. The Hong Kong Public Libraries have received generous donations of books for charity sale, and the proceeds generated have been on the rise." she said.
Ms Wong also urged people to participate in this meaningful charity event to buy more books and to further promote reading habits and recycling of books in the community.
Other officiating guests included the Chairman of Kwai Tsing District Council, Mr Chow Yick-hay, Committee Co-chairman of The Campaign Community Chest of Hong Kong, Mr Leo Kung, Vice Chairman of Agency for Volunteer Service, Dr Darwin Chen, Assistant Director of Home Affairs, Miss Monica Chen, Assistant Director (Estate Management) of Hong Kong Housing Authority, Mr Lai Ip-cheung, and Assistant Postmaster General (Postal) of Hongkong Post, Mr Chan Yau-fung.
The campaign is jointly presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, Home Affairs Department, 18 District Councils, Hong Kong Housing Authority, Hongkong Post, The Community Chest of Hong Kong and the Agency of Volunteer Service with an aim to promote reading, book sharing and help the needy.
The "Sale of Donated Books" this year is held from 10am to 6pm today and tomorrow at the Exhibition Gallery of the Hong Kong Central Library (HKCL), Boundary Street Sports Centre No 1 (near the Flower Market) and the Main Arena of the Yuen Wo Road Sports Centre (near Shatin Rural Committee Road). All books are sold at $5 each and the proceeds will be donated to The Community Chest of Hong Kong.
Crowd control measures may be implemented at the sales venues.
Last year, more than 21,000 people participated in the sales with 160,000 books sold.
