Hong Kong Central Library records 20-millionth reader
*****************************************************

In just three years since its opening in May 2001, the Hong Kong Central Library (HKCL) recorded its 20-millionth reader today (January 29).

The lucky reader, the nine-year-old Kan Po-yiu was congratulated and presented a certificate and gift by Prof John Leong, Chairman of the Committee on Libraries at the HKCL.

Same as other weekends, Kan and her mother went to the HKCL today to borrow some children books. She was thrilled when she learnt that she was the 20-millionth reader of the HKCL.

A primary student at Kau Yan School, she and her brother are frequent visitors to the HKCL and various public libraries. She has been using the facilities of the HKCL since its opening. With guidance from her mother, reading becomes her hobby and children story books are her favorites.

Prof John Leong said at the presentation ceremony that he was very pleased about the enthusiastic response of the community towards HKCL that it recorded its 20 million readers within three years of its opening.

It was most encouraging that the efforts made by the HKCL in developing as a cultural and information centre of Hong Kong is being well recognized, he added.

The Hong Kong Central Library has a stock of about 2 millions library materials with an average daily patronage of over 15,000. The HKCL’s popular facilities such as Multimedia Information System (MMIS), Language Learning Centre, Computer and Information Centre and Toy Library are always fully booked in advance. The MMIS has noted an accumulative usage rate of 5 millions.

Since its opening, the HKCL has organised various literary and cultural activities such as talks, seminars and thematic exhibitions. Many of the well-received progammes organised by the Hong Kong Public Libraries such as the Hong Kong Literature Festival, Reading Programme for Children and Youth, Reading Clubs, Summer Reading Month, Chinese Poetry Writing Competition and the forthcoming Book Donation and Sale Campaign are being held at the HKCL.

Details of the opening hours of the HKCL are:
