Top vocalists to showcase Chinese folk songs

Led by Professor Jin Tielin, the Head of China Conservatory of Music, eight top vocalists will perform for Hong Kong concert-goers an evening of Chinese folk songs next month (January).

The "Chinese Folk Song Troupe" will deliver a variety of Chinese folk music from different regions of China such as Jiangsu, Shanxi, Yunnan, Hunan, Zhejiang, Xinjiang, Qinghai, Inner Mongolia and Sichuan. Hong Kong audience will have an opportunity to enjoy the colourful customs and rich traditions of an array of China's ethnic groups. The eight vocalists are Cheng Guilan, Dong Hua, Fan Qingqing, Li Lin, Chen Lili, Zhou Xuan, Qu Xuexuan and Zhou Qiang,

The Artistic Director Jin Tielin is a renowned tenor and vocal educationalist in the Mainland. He is currently the head of the China Conservatory of Music. Jin has groomed many students to become well-known performers. He has made considerable contributions to the development of ethnic vocal music in the Mainland.

Among the cast is the National Class One Performer Cheng Guilan who has performed in the operas, "White Hair Girl, Red Guards of Honghu" and "Sister Jiang" in the 1990s and won many awards with her outstanding performance. Having performed a number of vocal recitals on the Mainland and toured to Europe, the US and throughout Asia, Ms Cheng has become a celebrated soprano.

Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the concert by the "Chinese Folk Song Troupe" will be staged at 8pm on January 15 (Saturday) and 16 (Sunday) at the Auditorium, Tsuen Wan Town Hall and the Auditorium, Yuen Long Theatre respectively. Tickets priced at $150, $120 and $80 are now available at all URBTIX outlets. Half-price concessions will be granted to senior citizens, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients. There will be a pre-concert talk (in Putonghua) hosted by Jin Tielin at 7.30pm on January 14, 2005 (Friday) at AC2, 4/F, Administration Building, Hong Kong Cultural Centre. Admission is free. Seats are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
