Chinese vocal tunes and melodies to be staged

The Chinese Music Company of Hong Kong will perform with renowned local vocalists Cheung Yu-kwan (tenor) and Wong Yan (soprano) at the "Showcase of Memorable Vocal Tunes and Melodies from the Chinese Repertoire" concert in January, 2005. The concert features TV and movie theme songs and Chinese traditional music.

The memorable programmes include the theme song of "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" and "A Man of True Grit", the theme song from the TV series "The Water Margin" by Cheung; "Meeting on the Mound" from the film "The People on the Grassland" and "When Roses Are in Bloom, the Fragrance Wafts for Ten Miles" from the film "The Mysterious Partner on the Road" by Cheung and Wong.

There are also solo performances of Suona, Yangqin, Erhu, Pipa, Sheng, Sanxian and Zhongruan on Chinese music.

The Chinese Music Company was formed by a group of Chinese musicians under the guidance of several renowned Chinese music virtuosi, teachers, critics and composers. The company upholds the Chinese music tradition of performing in small to medium-sized ensembles, and concentrates on the development, research and promotion of classical and folk music genres, such as Jiangnan sizhu, Cantonese, operatic and Chiuchow music. It focuses on promoting international cultural exchange and building up the audience base of Chinese ethnic music.

Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the concert will be staged at 8pm on January 9, 2005 at the Auditorium of the Sha Tin Town Hall. Tickets priced at $120, $100 and $80 are now available at all URBTIX outlets. Half-price concessions will be granted to senior citizens, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients. (Limited tickets for Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients available on a first-come-first-served basis.) 10% discount will be offered for Friends of LCSD performing venues.
