Hong Kong Youth Strings visits Kagoshima

Forty members of Hong Kong Youth Strings, which is trained and managed by the Music Office of Leisure and Cultural Services Department, will meet with young musicians in Kagoshima, Japan from October 15 to 19 as a part of their arts and cultural exchange visit.

During the visit, the Hong Kong Youth Strings will perform in a joint concert with Kagoshima Wind Ensemble at Kirishima International Music Hall and the Kids' Festa at Kanon Hall. The Hong Kong Youth Strings will also participate in a series of cultural exchange programmes including a visit to Kagoshima Prefectural Technical High School.

The team members, aged from 11 to 22 are mostly secondary students, including two primary students and two university students. The instruments they play include violins, violas, cellos and double basses.

The arts and cultural exchange tradition between Hong Kong and Kagoshima was first established since the first Hong Kong- Kagoshima Conference in 1980. In November 2003, the Kagoshima Show-gen-kai Koto Ensemble was invited to visit Hong Kong. In return, the Hong Kong Youth Strings is visiting Kagoshima this year.

Established in 1985, the Hong Kong Youth Strings has more than 50 young string players recruited through open audition. The orchestra has participated in the annual Hong Kong Youth Music Interflows and the Music Office Annual Gala. It performs in local community concerts and international youth music exchange activities.
