Urged to stand fast at their posts, provide quality services
*********************************************************

In response to a gathering organised by the Hong Kong and Kowloon Life Guard's Union outside the Leisure and Cultural Services Headquarters last night (August 22), a spokesman for the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) said that the department hoped the lifeguards could stand fast at their posts by providing quality life saving services so as to ensure swimmers' safety.

The LCSD has already set up two working groups on lifeguard manpower review and salary level of temporary contract lifeguard establishment, which have been actively working.

Although the union refused to send representatives to sit on the working groups, the department has invited the participation of frontline lifeguards and management staff of public swimming pools and beaches, who give concrete and constructive views.

"The working groups adopt a serious, open and fair attitude in their work, with a view to further enhancing the life saving services in public swimming pools and beaches," he said.

"We will keep the union informed of the work progress and we welcome union members' participation in the working groups at the time that they deem appropriate so as to join hands with the department in solving matters of their concern," the spokesman continued.

"Swimmers' safety is our prime concern. Members of the public can rest assured that all swimming pools and beaches managed by the LCSD have sufficient qualified lifeguards on duty during opening hours," added the spokesman.
