Calling for lantern designers
Entries are now being accepted from the public for the 2004 Lantern Design Competition.
The competition has been organised jointly by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department and the Education and Manpower Bureau to promote the craft of lantern making and to arouse interest in traditional Chinese crafts.
The competition has three divisions: primary school; secondary school; and the open division for tertiary students and the public.
Each participant can enter just one design in one division, but the lantern can be made by a small group of no more than four persons.
Open division now calls for entries and participants should send their entry forms to the department's Entertainment Office, 6/F, Queen Elizabeth Stadium, Oi Kwan Road, Wan Chai or by fax to 2575 0864 on or before July 23.
The handmade lanterns with labels issued by the organiser should be submitted to the Exhibition Hall, 1/F, Hong Kong City Hall Lower Block from September 21 to 23 from 10am to 7pm.
The panel of judges will be made up of art teachers and arts administrators. The first three winners of each division will be awarded a book coupon worth $1,800, $1,500 and $1,200 respectively, and entries judged to be outstanding will be awarded book coupons of $400. All the winners will be awarded certificates of merit and other prizes. Three prizes will also be awarded to those with special designs.
All lanterns will be displayed at the Exhibition Hall of the Low Block, Hong Kong City Hall from September 29 to October 8.
Entry forms for the open division are available at the department's major cultural venues and all public libraries, or can be downloaded from the website, http://www.lcsd.gov.hk/eo
