Exhibition in Commemoration of Master Yang Shanshen to be held at Museum of Art

An exhibition featuring some 30 representative works by Yang Shanshen from the collection of Hong Kong Museum of Art will be held at the Chinese Fine Art Gallery of the Museum from this Friday (May 21) to pay tribute to Yang, the master of Lingnan School of Chinese painting, who passed away lately.

The works to be presented will include Yang's sketches, flower-and-bird painting, animals, landscapes and calligraphy, dating from the 1940s to the 1990s. The exhibition will provide the public with a glimpse of the achievements and unique artistic style of this great master.

Yang Shanshen (1913-2004) was born at Chizi, Guangdong. In 1930, he moved to Hong Kong and later founded the Chun Fung Art Club to teach students. Yang was one of the most influential masters of the second generation of the Lingnan School of Chinese painting. His works have been widely exhibited in Hong Kong, China and overseas and are collected by prestigious public and private institutions and museums. In 2000, Yang was granted the SBS by the Government for his superb achievements and contributions. On May 15 this year, Yang passed away.

Excelling in painting animals, flowers, figures and landscapes, Yang blended the essence of life sketches and the creative styles of the Lingnan School, which had become a unique characteristic of his artistic creation.

The Museum of Art has been focusing on the study and collection of Yang's works since its inception. In 1981, the Museum organised an exhibition of "The Art of Yang Shanshen". In 1995, the Museum organized "Lingnan Spirit - A Retrospective of Yang Shanshen", another large-scale exhibition on this master, and published an exhibition catalogue as well.

Located at 10 Salisbury Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon, the Museum of Art opens from 10am to 6pm daily and is closed on Thursdays (except public holidays). Admission is $10, and a half-price concession is available to full-time students, senior citizens and people with disabilities. Admission is free on Wednesdays.
