Grammy-winning quartet to play at the City Hall
***********************************************

The world renowned "Emerson String Quartet" will give local concert-goers a performance to remember when they play in Hong Kong next month.

Dubbed as "America's greatest quartet" by Time Magazine, the quartet will perform at the Concert Hall, Hong Kong City Hall at 8pm on June 27 (Sunday). The programme will include Haydn's "String Quartet in D, Op. 64, No. 5, 'The Lark'", Shostakovich's "String Quartet No. 8 in C Minor, Op. 110" and Beethoven's "String Quartet in E Minor, Op. 59, No. 2, 'Razumovsky'".

The quartet was formed by violinists Philip Setzer and Eugene Drucker with two other members in 1976, taking the name from the great American poet and philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson. Viola player Lawrence Dutton and cellist David Finckel joined later and became the existing ensemble.

Emerson String Quartet is one of the world's foremost chamber ensembles and has won many awards. They are the six times Grammy-winners including two unprecedented honours for "Best Classical Album" and the winner of Gramophone Magazine's 1989 "Record of the Year Award" - the first chamber music ensemble ever to receive the top prize. Last month they became the first chamber group to win the Avery Fisher Prize.

They have played the complete cycles of the Bartok, Beethoven and Shostakovich string quartets in the world's major concert halls and are lauded globally as a string quartet that approaches both classical and contemporary repertoire with equal mastery and enthusiasm.

"Emerson String Quartet " is one of the programmes in "Music Rendezvous - City Hall Concert Hall Series" presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department.
