International Museum Day Hong Kong to kick off next Saturday

The "International Museum Day 2004, Hong Kong", organised by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD), will be held next Saturday and Sunday (May 15 and May 16) and involving 23 museums and cultural institutions from Guangdong Province, Macau and Hong Kong.

Members of the public will get the chance to visit all the local participating museums free of charge and view more than 80 exhibitions.

Meanwhile, a Museum Exposition with a theme "Enjoying, Learning and Exploring at Museums" will be held at the Piazza and Special Exhibition Hall of Hong Kong Science Museum during May 15 and May 16. Open from 10am to 6pm daily, the two-day colourful Expo will provide visitors with entertaining booth games and a series of educational activities.

There will be glamorous stall games, ceremonial stage and family corner programmes such as puppet show, talks on tea and Chinese medicine, model making, origami workshop and a "Treasure Hunting" game. Booths of 23 cultural institutions at the Special Exhibition Hall of the Science Museum will also provide details of individual museum's collection, characteristics, services and activities.

To encourage more people to visit local museums frequently, a "Hong Kong Museum Tour" game will also be organised. Visitors to the Museum Exposition will receive a game card to take part in the game to be held from May 17 to August 29. Participants will be able to get items such as souvenir cover with a stamp printed with individual museum of no face value, souvenir mug or one-year museum pass issued by LCSD while stocks last.

Other entertaining activities during the two days include lectures on museum work and exhibitions, demonstrations on art and traditional handicrafts, model making, children's programmes, free guided tours and behind-the-scenes tour.

And visitors will find an opinion card inside the Museum Guide Book for them to fill in what they think of the participating Hong Kong museums. Completed cards should be sent to the museum concerned on or before August 29. Fifty participants will be selected in a lucky draw to be held on September 3, each will be presented a one-year museum pass issued by LCSD.

"International Museum Day 2004, Hong Kong" is in support of the International Museum Day first designated on May 18, 1978 by the International Council of Museums. It is being organised locally for the fourth time.

Apart from Hong Kong, the International Museum Day this year also sees the participation of museums and cultural institutions from Guangdong Province and Macau. They include: Hong Kong Heritage Museum and its branches, Hong Kong Museum of History and its branches, Hong Kong Museum of Coastal Defence, Hong Kong Museum of Art, Flagstaff House Museum of Tea Ware, Hong Kong Science Museum, Hong Kong Space Museum, Hong Kong Film Archive, Antiquities and Monuments Office, Central Conservation Section under LCSD, Art Promotion Office, Museum of Ethnology, Police Museum, Tung Wah Museum, The Hong Kong Racing Museum, Hong Kong Museum of Medical Sciences, Po Leung Kuk Museum, University Museum and Art Gallery of The University of Hong Kong, Art Museum of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Correctional Services Museum, The Hong Kong Planning and Infrastructure Exhibition Gallery, Guangdong Provincial Department of Culture and The Museum of Macao.
