Everlasting Melodies, everlasting memories

"The Everlasting Melodies Concert" to be performed next month (May) by the Chinese Music Virtuosi will feature works by famous Chinese instrumental musicians.

The programme, with navigation, includes "Reflection of the Moon on the Water" by Hua Yanjun (Abing), "Happy Encounter" by Feng Zicun, "A Shandong Ditty" by Liu Mingyuan, "Phoenix in the Sky" by Hu Tianquan, "Battle Against the Typhoon" by Wang Changyuan, "Flying Partridges" by Zhao Songting, "A Shanxi Melody" by Yan Haideng, "Enchanting Maple Trees of Autumn" by Lo Ka-chi, "Lovers' Reunion at the Milky Way" by Lu Wencheng, "Flickering of Red Candles" and "Xu Lai" by Liu Tianhua, "The Sanmen Gorge Capriccio" by Liu Wenjin and more.

The concerts, presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, will be held on May 15 (Saturday) at 8pm at the Cultural Activities Hall of the Tuen Mun Town Hall and May 22 (Saturday) at 8pm at the Auditorium of the Tai Po Civic Centre.

Founded in 1997, Chinese Music Virtuosi aims to promote Chinese instrumental music - from cherished oldies to newly commissioned works. Members are all experienced music teachers and performers including Loo Sze-wang (sheng), Chu Siu-wai (xiao/dizi), Pan Ya-sze (yangqin), Leung Oi-ying (zheng), Wong Chi-chung (huqin) and Yeung Po-wing (pipa).

Past works include "Chinese Music Workshop", "Chinese Music Decode", Conference Concert "Ancient Fabrics New Threads", Chamber Opera "The Lamp of Everlasting Light" & "The Divorce", "Musicarama" 1999 & 2000, Chamber Opera "Wenji" in 2002 Hong Kong Arts Festival and The Chinese University of Hong Kong Chung Chi College Golden Jubilee Concert and concerts in 2003 Hong Kong Arts Festival. Overseas festival engagements included the 34th Festival International Encuentros 2002 and the 5th Festival International de Musica de Buenos Aires in Argentina, and the Australia tour, the Six Hermits project presented by the Song Company, in Sydney Conservatorium, Parramatta and Melbourne Festival in 2002 and the Est Ovest "Un viaggio hella musica di oggi" project with Xenia ensemble in Turin, Italy, in 2003.

Tickets priced at $70 for Tuen Mun Town Hall; $80 and $50 for Tai Po Civic Centre are available at URBTIX outlets. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients (limited tickets for students and CSSA recipients available on a first-come, first-served basis). A 10% discount is offered to Friends of LCSD performing venues.
