New library service for Tung Chung
The new Tung Chung Public Library opened today (April 3) offering a comprehensive library service to Tung Chung residents. Officiating at the opening ceremony were the Director of Leisure and Cultural Services, Ms Anissa Wong and the Chairman of Islands District Council, Mr Daniel Lam.
Ms Wong said at the opening ceremony that with the rapid development of Tung Chung New Town and the continuous growth of its population, there was an increasing demand in the local community for library facilities.
"In view of this, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department has set up a small library in a leased space to alleviate the pressing demand of local residents for library services," she said.
With a floor area of 745 square metres, the Tung Chung Public Library is a small library with various facilities including an adult lending library, a children's library, a newspapers and periodicals section and an extension activities room.
In addition, the library is equipped with self-charging terminals and computer terminals for readers to gain access to the multimedia information services, Library Catalogue, the Internet and CD-ROMs.
The library has an initial book stock of about 40,000 items, 2,000 compact discs, more than 70 newspaper and periodical titles for people of all ages and interests.
Besides, the library will organise extension activities including storytelling for children and book display to promote interest in reading.
Students and members of cultural and educational organisations interested in having a better understanding of the library's facilities and services are welcome to contact the library for group visits.
The Tung Chung Public Library is located at Shop 211, 2/F, Yat Tung Shopping Centre, Yat Tung (I) Estate, Tung Chung, Lantau Island. Easily accessible by public transport, readers can access the library by Buses No. S64, S52, 37 or 38 at Exit B of Tung Chung MTR station.
