Peter Stein brings "Hamlet" from Russia to Hong Kong

Renowned director Peter Stein is bringing William Shakespeare's "Hamlet" to Hong Kong.

With Russia's top-class actors and stage practitioners from the "International Confederation of Theatre Associations (Russia), Stein is going to show Hong Kong patrons how Hamlet's genuineness, thoughtfulness, and sincerity make him special; how Hamlet chooses not to compromise with evil; and how he reaffirms the tragic dignity of a basically decent person in a bad world.

Under the direction of Stein, one of the five leading stage directors in the world, this production been acclaimed in Russia, Bulgaria, Germany and Japan. The title role "Hamlet" is played by Russia's famous movie star, Evgeny Mironov.

A foundation member of the Berliner Schaubuhne and director for the drama division of the Salzburg Festival, Stein has displayed his outstanding abilities at the Paris Opera, as well as at the Welsh National Opera and the Salzburg Festival.

Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the performance will be staged at 7.30pm from May 20 to 24 (Thursday to Monday) at the Studio Theatre, Hong Kong Cultural Centre. Tickets priced at $360, $280 and $200 are now available at all URBTIX outlets. Half-price concessions will be granted to senior citizens, people with disabilities, full-time students, and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients (Limited tickets for students and CSSA recipients available on a first-come-first-served basis). The production is performed in Russian with Chinese and English subtitles. Latecomers will be admitted only at the interval after the first part of the performance which lasts two hours and 15 minutes. The show contains a scene of partial nudity.
