Young dancers to showcase Chinese folk dance

The Youth Dance Company of Beijing Dance Academy is heading to Hong Kong next month to perform dance works from China's ethnic groups such as Han, Tibetan, Mongolian, Uygar, Korean, Dai, Miao, Wa, Jinpo and Yi.

The "Chinese Folk Dance Showcase" will be staged on February 28 and 29 (Saturday and Sunday) at 8pm at the Auditorium of the Yuen Long Theatre and the Auditorium of the Tsuen Wan Town Hall respectively.

The shows are presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department.

Artistic Directors Zhao Tiechun and Han Ping together with Director Zhou Ping will lead the dancers. Principal dancers are Xu Men, winner of the Class 3 Performance Award at the Third "Lotus Award" Dance Competition; Yan He, Zhao Kai and Hu Xiao, winners of Gold and Silver Awards at the Seventh Korea International Dance Festival.

The award-winning works are "The East is Red" - Han, "Expecting" - Han, "Fragrant Yak Butter" - Tibetan, "Miao Girls" - Miao, "The Black River" - Wa, "Hunt, Skip, Whirl" - Jingpo, "Young Man, Sixian, Cherry Blossoms" - Yi, "Love in the Mountains and the Wild" - Yi, "Sword Dance of the Divine" - Korean (February 28 only), "The Mongolian" - Mongolian, and "Mother's Wrap-around" - Mongolian (February 29 only).

Other pieces are "The Uygurs" - Uygur, "Vines and Leaves" - Dai and "Boat People" - Jiangnan (February 28 only).

Beijing Dance Academy has groomed numerous award-winners in various national and international dance competitions. The academy has given highly successful performances in the United States, Germany, Canada, the Philippines, India, Syria, Egypt, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Macau. The Youth Dance Company is composed of teachers and students from the Performing Department of the Academy.

Tickets priced at $130, $100 and $70 are available at all URBTIX outlets. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients (limited tickets for CSSA recipients available on a first-come, first-served basis). For purchases of full-price tickets, the following discounts apply: 4-9 tickets, 10%; 10-19 tickets, 15%; 20 tickets or more, 20%. A 10% discount is offered to Friends of LCSD performing venues.
