Ethnic dance "Under the Miao Mountain" to be staged Feb 20 and 21

"Under the Miao Mountain" will be performed by ethnic dancers from Guizhou at Ko Shan Theatre from February 20 to 21.

The performance, presented by the Hong Kong Bauhinia Dance Association, is part of the Leisure and Cultural Service Department's "Chinese Ethnic Music and Dance Series". It will feature the dances of various Guizhou ethnic groups, including the Miao, the Dong, the Shui, the Buyi and the Yi nationality. The programme includes "Lu Sheng Dance", "The Happy Miao Girls", "The Horn Fight", "Full-blown Red Flowers" and "The Joyous Torch Festival".

Hong Kong Bauhinia aims to promote the art of traditional Chinese dance. From 1997 onwards, the association has performed with various Mainland groups, such as the Dance Faculty of the Central Institute of Ethnology, the Beijing Dance Academy, the Chinese People's Liberation Army Arts Academy, and the Xinyi Dance Troupe of the Xinjiang Arts College, winning critical acclaim.

The Dance Department of the Arts College, Guizhou University is the only professional dance academy in Guizhou. It provides instruction in dance education, ethnic dance performance, and ethnic song and dance performance. It has created 24 original dance works, among which 16 have won provincial or regional awards, and the Dance Department's teachers and students have won awards in national dance competitions.

Tickets priced at $120 and $90 are now available at all URBTIX outlets. Half-price concessions apply to senior citizens, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients, while Friends of LCSD performing venues receive a 10% discount. The "Chinese Ethnic Music and Dance Series" runs from January to March. It features seven Chinese minority troupes - from Inner Mongolia, Yunnan, Xinjiang and Guizhou.
