'Lilting Tunes of Taiwan' showcases island's young musical elite

Eight young Taiwanese musicians will join veteran performers Wong Ching-ping and Chen Chung-sheng in "Chinese Instrumental Music Showcase - The Lilting Tunes of Taiwan" at 8pm, February 21 (Saturday) at the Auditorium of the Sha Tin Town Hall.

The programme ranges from Taiwan ballads, music of the Mountain Aborigines, Yunnan, Tibet and Xinjiang, to Western music and original creations.

Highlights include "Domestic Animals All Are Thriving" performed on the rarely played leiqin and two works closely associated with Wong and Chen, "Green Rain Cape" and "Grasshopper Fights with Cock".

The eight young musicians have been chosen from the student and teaching ranks of Taiwan's best-known Chinese orchestras and arts colleges.

Taiwan has three professional Chinese orchestras, music departments at several universities and many orchestras in schools. These along with the opening of cross-strait links have provided many opportunities for the young to study music under the best teachers in the most stimulating environments. Performance standards have greatly improved over the decade, and this is reflected in the quality of professional music groups.

"The Lilting Tunes of Taiwan" is presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department.

Tickets priced at $160, $130 and $100 are available at URBTIX outlets. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients. A 10% discount applies to Friends of LCSD performing venues.
