The Box performs a theatrical concert, 'Beauty and the Beast', Jan. 29-Feb. 1
The local music group 'the box', comprising composer-director-performers Kung Chi-shing and Peter Suart, will join other local artists to perform a brand new theatrical concert, "The Box, Side 13 - Beauty and the Beast", at the Studio Theatre of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre.
The programme will be held at 8pm from January 29 to February 1, 2004 (Thursday to Sunday). Joining Kung (electric violin/woodwinds) and Suart (piano/electric guitar/percussion/vocals) will be Chan Wai-fat (electric guitar/bass), Julia Mok (keyboards/vocals), Chau Chin-tung (Percussion) and Makoto Matsushima (Voice/movement).
Elaborating on the title of the concert, Kung said, "We are beasts that know beauty. That is our burden and our gift. We have made Chartres cathedral, the electric chair, the suites for unaccompanied cello and the spiked mace.
"We have thrown a girdle around the world that shrinks it daily. And now we are on the threshold of genetic and artificial intelligence technologies that will recast humans, machines and our fellow life forms. We may make the world a garden of earthly delights or a colosseum of cruelty. What will you do, naked ape?"
Since establishing the music group 'the box' in 1987, Kung and Suart have been exploring and developing a unique form of music theatre whose artistic expression is strongly rooted in Hong Kong's vitality and cultural environment. Their music, made up of both original instrumental works and songs, is an evocative hybrid of classical, folk, pop and avant-garde. Their performances range from theatrical concerts to full-blown music theatre works. The music is linked to a strong visual environment and enhanced by narrative and theatrical elements.
" The Box, Side 13 - Beauty and the Beast" is presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department.
