Yi Nationality troupe presents its unique song and dance on Jan. 16

The "Chinese Ethnic Music and Dance Series" presents the Song and Dance Troupe of the Yi Nationality, Liangshan Autonomous Prefecture on 8 pm on January 16 (Friday) at the Auditorium, Kwai Tsing Theatre.

The troupe's songs, instrumental music and dance reflect the colourful traditions of the Yi people.

The programme includes female group dance, mixed duo dance, folk songs and Hulusheng, Hulusi, Mabu, Bawu, Yueqin and Kouxian solos.

Eminent Yi singers Jimuxieer, Anluti and Wu Yong-bo will present an array of captivating and charming songs like "Da He Zha Ni", "A Re Niu", "Run Fast, My Horse!", "The Harmonious Sound of Mabu", "Ga Yo La", "A Su Ba Di" and "Mother and Son".

And the programme includes exquisite renditions by the troupe's extraordinary dancers - "A Maiden's Red Skirt", "The Red Felt Cape", "The Sonorous Yueqin", "Skirt-changing Ceremony", "Jie Shi Qie", "Mountain Streams" and "Guest from Afar, Please Stay".

The Song and Dance Troupe of the Yi Nationality, Liangshan Autonomous Prefecture was founded in 1956. It is the largest and longest-established professional performing group in the Yi region, with more than 140 artists and staff.

The troupe has won a host of prizes at national and provincial levels. Tours have taken it to many Mainland cities, to Hong Kong and to such foreign destinations as Turkey, Malta, Greece, Britain and Japan.

The Song and Dance Troupe of the Yi Nationality, Liangshan Autonomous Prefecture is presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department.

Ticket priced at $180, $130 and $90 are available at all URBTIX outlets. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients, while Friends of LCSD performing venues receive a 10% discount. An exhibition of photographs of the Yi Nationality, Liangshan Autonomous Prefecture, as well as a display of some of their instruments and costumes, will be held from December 20 to January 1 at the Exhibition Gallery, Kwai Tsing Theatre, and from January 4 to 6 in the Foyer, Hong Kong Cultural Centre.

A pre-performance talk (in Putonghua) and a free foyer performance are scheduled for January 15 at 6.30pm and 7.30pm respectively at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre. Please refer to programme leaflets for details.

The "Chinese Ethnic Music and Dance Series" runs from January to March 2004. It features seven Chinese minority troupes from Inner Mongolia, Yunnan, Xinjiang and Guizhou.
