Flamenco star brings Gypsy flamenco dance to HK
************************************************

Hailed as "the best artist to set foot in the Big Apple" by the New York Times, flamenco star Farruquito, together with his company of dancers, singers and musicians from Spain, will perform the original Gypsy flamenco dance, "Alma Vieja" (Old Soul), next month.

The performances will take place at 8pm from January 16 to 18, 2004 (Friday to Sunday) at the Concert Hall of the Hong Kong City Hall.

The shows are presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department.

Farruquito is the guardian of a dance school founded by his grandfather, Farruco, the patriarch of gypsy flamenco. Born to a family of flamenco artists, Farruquito made his debut on the international stage at the age of five in the Broadway show, "Flamenco Puro", and his appearance in the film, "Flamenco" by Carlos Saura at the age of 12 further boosted his career.

At the age of 15, Farruquito took on the responsibility of continuing the family tradition after the death of Farruco in 1997. The sudden death of his father made him head of the family at just 19. Farruquito participated in the world's leading festivals including Mont de Marsan, the Royal Festival Hall, London in 1997 and the Flamenco Festival USA 2003. He also heads the academy, located in Seville, which preaches the precepts of the Farruco school.

Today his achievements as an artist are well recognised:

"... the noblest exponent of the art of flamenco today" - San Francisco Chronicle

"Few can match his combination of superior technique and duende" - The New York Times
