Hunan, HK puppetry and shadowgraph masters to join forces in mid-January
*****************************************************************

The Hunan Puppet & Shadow Art Troupe of China will join the Hong Kong Puppet and Shadow Art Center in "Monkey King Subdues the Demons" January 15-18.

The show consists of two well-known fairy tales, "The Cobweb Cave" and "The Conquest of the White-bone Demon", performed with rod-top and shadow puppets, aided by glove puppets.

The creative puppetry integrates a multitude of different art forms with spectacular and novel manipulation skills, such as "turning silk threads into cobwebs", "split-second metamorphosis and face changing" and "air fighting of insects and birds".

The Hunan Puppet and Shadow Art Troupe of China was founded in 1956. Besides being the custodians of a fine traditional art, the troupe has been an innovator in puppetry and shadowgraph techniques, all the while developing its own special style. The troupe has performed in Asia, Europe and America and won numerous awards.

The Hong Kong Puppet and Shadow Art Center was co-founded by Wong Fai Puppet and Shadow of Hong Kong and the Hunan Puppet and Shadow Art Troupe. It organises performances, courses and exhibitions by puppet and shadow art groups in Hong Kong. Among local organisations, it is one of the most active promoters of the traditional Chinese arts of marionettes and shadow puppetry.

"Monkey King Subdues the Demons" is presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department.
