City Contemporary Dance Co. performs "That Time/ Kwaidan" Dec. 26-27
*********************************************************
The City Contemporary Dance Company will perform a double bill, "That Time/ Kwaidan", at 8pm on December 26 and 27 (Friday and Saturday) at the Auditorium of the Kwai Tsing Theatre.
"That Time" is choreographed by Maggi Sietsma, a winner of the Sidney Myer Performing Arts Award, and inspired by a work of the same title by Nobel laureate Samuel Beckett. It combines fragmentary images of memory, dreams and layered images with no beginning and no end to create an extraordinary landscape of the mind. At times impressionistic, "That Time" hints at mysteries which are slowly revealed.
Using music by Astor Piazzolla and Dino Saluzzi, Sietsma artfully employs the techniques of film noir in her deconstruction of nostalgia.
Cruel, daring and beautiful, "Kwaidan/ Emaki" is adapted from the classic Japanese horror movie "Kwaidan" by Masaki Kobayashi, who won the Special Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 1965. In this dance theatre version choreographed by Sunny Pang, three bizarre ancient Japanese ghost stories are juxtaposed with modern episodes on a 3-D Japanese painting scroll (emaki). A monk, a snow maiden and a samurai unwittingly fulfill their destinies to eerie sounds and poetry composed by Peter Suart.
The programme is presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department.
