Rising piano star Wei Danwen performs December 3

Pianist Wei Danwen, one of China's most celebrated virtuosos, will give a recital at the Theatre of the Hong Kong City Hall at 8pm on Wednesday, December 3.

The programme features Beethoven's "Nine Variations on a March by Dressler in C Minor", Chopin's "Sonata No. 2 in B-flat Minor" and "Andante Spianato and Grande Polonaise in E-flat", Schubert's "Impromptu in C Minor", "Impromptu in A-flat" and "Moments musicaux in A-flat" and Liszt/Horowitz's "Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2".

Born in Beijing, Wei Danwen entered a school affiliated with the Central Conservatory of China at the age of 12 and studied with Li Qifang. He then earned a master's degree at the Juilliard School in New York. Wei was one of the last two students of the legendary pianist Vladimir Horowitz.

He has a long list of prizes under his belt. He won honours at the Montreal International Piano Competition, the Robert Casadesus International Piano Competition and the Marguerite Long International Piano Competition, among many others.

Wei has given recitals throughout Europe and the United States and performed with the New York Philharmonic, the Minnesota Orchestra and the Seattle Symphony.

"Piano Recital by Wei Danwen" is presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department.

Tickets priced at $120 and $80 are available at URBTIX outlets. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients. A 10% discount applies to Friends of LCSD performing venues.
