Public invited to watch harbour race and join waterfront carnival

The Panerai Around the Island Race 2003 will be held on November 2 (Sunday). The public is invited to watch the spectacular yacht and windsurfing races and to enjoy a morning of fun and games at a waterfront carnival.

The Panerai Around the Island Race 2003, jointly organised by the Leisure & Cultural Services Department (LCSD), the Marine Department, the Hong Kong Police Force and the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club, is one of the major sports events of the Relaunch Hong Kong Campaign.

More than 130 yachting teams and windsurfers will take part in the event. The athletes come from around the world and include five Olympic gold medallists, among them Hong Kong's Lee Lai-shan.

The race will start at 8am. Participants will start at the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club at Kellett Island and sail around Hong Kong Island. The best vantage points will be the North Point waterfront (8.30am to 9.30am), the Kowloon waterfront (9am to 10.30am) and Golden Bauhinia Square in Wan Chai (9.30am to10.30am).

The carnival will be held at the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club from 9am to 1.30pm. There will be live music, a fire-boat performance, visits to the newly restored Madame Maurene and a police launch, windsurfing and rowing simulators, games booths and clown performances.

Free tickets for the carnival are now available at the LCSD's District Leisure Services Offices on a first-come, first-served basis.

For enquiries, please phone 2239 9362 or 2414 5555.

Ends/Friday October 24, 2003
