The critically acclaimed Song & Dance Ensemble of the People's Liberation Army General Political Department will perform "Raising the Flag" in their third visit to Hong Kong.

Founded in 1953 and commended by the Ministry of Culture as one of the most outstanding major arts groups in China, the Song & Dance Ensemble of the People's Liberation Army General Political Department comprises an instrumental ensemble, a dance troupe, an orchestra and a folk music troupe. Members of the dance troupe have composed and choreographed an abundance of music and dance programmes, featuring mainly military themes with strong nationalistic and modern characteristics.

The troupe's dazzling repertoire and enthralling performances have been highly popular with the army and the public. It has won numerous grand prizes in music and dance competitions, including the Creativity Award and the Performance Award in the 14th Vitebsk International Dance Competition; the Gold Award in the Spring of April, Korean Nationality International Arts Festival; the Class One Award at the National Dance Competition; the Wenhua Award; the Class One Award in the Army-wide Contest; the People's Liberation Army Culture and Arts Award; and the Class One Award in the Army-wide New Works Contest.

The Song & Dance Ensemble's five previous performances in Hong Kong, in 1999 and 2001, were a complete sellout. The response to their tours of Asia, Africa, Europe and America was equally overwhelming.

The performances are presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department.
