***************************************************************

The critically acclaimed Song & Dance Ensemble of the People's Liberation Army General Political Department will perform "Raising the Flag" in their third visit to Hong Kong.

Featuring over a dozen award-winning dance pieces with military vigour and ethnic love, "Raising the Flag" will be staged on October 31 (Friday) at 8pm at the Auditorium of Tuen Mun Town Hall; November 1 (Saturday) at 8pm and November 2 (Sunday) at 3pm at the Auditorium of Sha Tin Town Hall.

The troupe is led by choreographers and directors Zhang Jigang, Yang Xiaoyang, Sun Yupeng and Xia Xiaohu.

Its award-winning dancers are Qiu Hui (Class One Award in National Dance Competition), Xia Xiaohu, Sun Yupeng, Gu Liangliang (Class One Award in National Dance Competition), Liu Hui (Gold Award in the National Lotus Cup Dance Competition), Zhang Sun (Class Two Award in National Arts Spectacle), Zang Li (Distinguished Performance Award in National Dance Competition), Yang Yi (Class One Award in Army-wide Contest), Qu Rui (Class One Award in National Arts Spectacle) and Chai Mingming (Class One Award in National Arts Spectacle).

The rich array of programmes includes Glory; Lotus Poem; Bird of the Sun; Chess Playing; Scent of the Cream Butter; Heroes; Penetrations; Flying Apsaras; Presenting a Tibetan Silk Scarf to the PLA; Benevolence; Our Motherland, Please Inspect; Yearning; That Snowfall...; Soldiers' Holiday; To Go Ashore With Dream and Green Leaf.

Founded in 1953 and commended by the Ministry of Culture as one of the most outstanding major arts groups in China, the Song & Dance Ensemble of the People's Liberation Army General Political Department comprises an instrumental ensemble, a dance troupe, an orchestra and a folk music troupe. Members of the dance troupe have composed and choreographed an abundance of music and dance programmes, featuring mainly military themes with strong nationalistic and modern characteristics.

The troupe's dazzling repertoire and enthralling performances have been highly popular with the army and the public. It has won numerous grand prizes in music and dance competitions, including the Creativity Award and the Performance Award in the 14th Vitebsk International Dance Competition; the Gold Award in the Spring of April, Korean Nationality International Arts Festival; the Class One Award at the National Dance Competition; the Wenhua Award; the Class One Award in the Army-wide Contest; the People's Liberation Army Culture and Arts Award; and the Class One Award in the Army-wide New Works Contest.

The Song & Dance Ensemble's five previous performances in Hong Kong, in 1999 and 2001, were a complete sellout. The response to their tours of Asia, Africa, Europe and America was equally overwhelming.

The performances are presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department.
