Hong Kong's first Harmonica Festival debuts October 4-5


The first Hong Kong Harmonica Festival, jointly presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) and the Hong Kong Harmonica Association (HKHA), will be held on October 4 and 5.

The opening concert, at 8 pm on October 4 (Saturday) at the Concert Hall, Hong Kong Cultural Centre, will feature superstars of the instrument, including the Adler Trio from Israel and Robert Bonfiglio from the United States. Christine Niehaus will provide piano accompaniment.

The programme includes Rossini's "Wilhelm Tell Overture", J. Strauss's "Tritsch Tratsch Polka", Mozart's "Kegelstatt Trio, K.498, and a selection of love songs by Sam Hui.

The Adler Trio has a rich repertoire that encompasses classics, pop, soul, country and western, ethnic and world music, Jewish and Israeli music. The trio has thrilled audiences in the United States, Germany, France, Canada, South Africa, Belgium, Switzerland, the Netherlands, England, Uruguay, Taiwan, Japan and Israel. It has released eight LP records and six CDs.

Robert Bonfiglio has dazzled audiences throughout the world with his versatility, shifting with ease from harmonica concertos to sizzling blues. He has appeared as soloist with Skitch Henderson and the New York Pops, John Williams and the Boston Pops and John Mauceri and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. He gave the world premiere of Henry Cowell's Harmonica Concerto with the Brooklyn Philharmonic and the West Coast premiere with the Los Angeles Philharmonic under the baton of Lucas Foss.

The Harmonica Festival also includes an open solo competition on different types of harmonicas, an open stage performance and seminars by harmonica virtuosi. For details of festival activities, please visit

Tickets for the opening concert priced at $170, $140, $110 and $80 are now available at all URBTIX outlets. Half-price concessions apply to senior citizens, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients, while Friends of LCSD performing venues receive a 10% discount.
