Students enjoy friendly rivalry in inter-school sports

About 1,600 primary school students sampled the excitement of competition in nine simplified sports in the annual Inter-school Easy Sport Competition 2003 today (July 12).

Another students, parents and teachers shared the fun at 13 athletic game stalls while the competition was in progress at the Wong Chuk Hang Sports Centre and Aberdeen Sports Ground.

The competition is a major part of the School Sports Programme jointly organised by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the Education and Manpower Bureau and National Sports Associations.

The programme was launched to give students more opportunities to participate in sports regularly.

During 2002-03, 859 schools, or about 65% of the schools in Hong Kong, joined the programme. Student enrolment reached 360,000.

In the year ahead, the programme will offer students with good athletic potential intensive training under a subsidiary scheme, the Joint School Training Programme.

At the opening ceremony, 41 outstanding athletes received certificates of appointment as this year's School Sports Ambassadors. They will visit schools to boost students' interest in sports through demonstrations and talks.

The programme has also provided roving exhibitions and training and captain training in 27 sports ranging from ball games and fencing, to windsurfing and even lion dancing.

Schools that wish to join the programme may download the enrolment form from the department's website at or contact its Community Sports Team on 2601 8861 for details.
