Gallery Ferry fills island journey with art

Starting today (July 12), passengers who take the ferry to Cheung Chau will enjoy a journey filled with artistic fun.

Gallery Ferry is a partnership project of the Art Promotion Office of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the Hong Kong Arts Development Council, New World First Ferry Services Limited, and New World First Bus Services Limited.

Like the successful Mobile Art Gallery that preceded it, this project aims to create new exhibition space where the public can enjoy art.

On display are three installation works and 20 groups of two-dimensional artwork selected in a competition. The installation works will be displayed for one month in three ferries running between Cheung Chau and Central, while the two-dimensional works will be shown at Central Pier 5 for six months.

At today's Gallery Ferry launch and award presentation, the Deputy Director (Culture) of Leisure and Cultural Services, Miss Choi Suk-kuen, noted that the department was committed to promoting art and culture and giving the public access to quality art activities.

"We hope to bring art out of the museums and galleries into the community," she said.

"A Dynamic City, the theme for this project, reflects Hong Kong's present situation. Now that SARS has been defeated, people are getting together to help promote Hong Kong. Artists particularly are contributing to the beautification of Hong Kong, making this a more pleasant and lively place to live and visit," Miss Choi said.

The selected installation works were created by the art group "3 Voices", Kum Chi-keung and Lam Yuk-lin respectively.

The two-dimensional works were created by Chan Wun-han, Cheung Chi-wai, Chiu Chin-ting, Chow Chun-fai, Choy Man-kin, Selina Ho Chui-fan, Kwok Ying, Lai yee-man, Lam Yuk-lin, Lee Kowk-chuen, Ma Chi-hang, Ma Siu-han, Ng Yuen-wa, Sharon Smith, Shen Ping, So Leung, Tse Tak-lung, Wong Chung-mei, Yang Yuen-yuk and Sophia Yung Tsz-kei.

For enquiries call the Art Promotion Office on 3101 2739. For ferry schedules and opening hours of Pier 5 call First Ferry Customer Service Hotline on 2131 8181.
