LCSD introduces Shaolin physical exercise training courses

A total of 90 physical exercise courses based on once-secret wushu lessons of the Shaolin Temple will be offered by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) in 18 districts from August to December, 2003.

The courses belong to a series of Shaolin wushu activities organised by the LCSD, the Hong Kong Culture Association, the Songshan Shaolin Temple of China and the Hong Kong Wushu Union, as part of the Government's Relaunch Hong Kong campaign.

"The basic form of Shaolin physical exercise can be traced back to the founder of the sect, Da Mo. It promotes health by stretching the sinews, strengthening the bones and ligaments and regulating breathing. It is suitable for people of all ages and constitutions, and ideal for relieving the pressures of urban life," an LCSD spokesman said.

There will be five Shaolin physical exercise courses in each of the 18 districts from August to December. Each course can accommodate 30 participants.

Anyone aged 9 or above is welcome to join the courses. The fee is HK$120 per person. Children under 15, full-time students and senior citizens aged 60 and above will enjoy a 50 % reduced-price concession.

Courses in August will be conducted by martial arts monks direct from the Songshan Shaolin Temple. The courses from September to December will be conducted by professional instructors from the Hong Kong Wushu Union who have been trained by the monks.

Enrolment for the August courses will take place from Wednesday, July 2 to Friday, July 4. Details and application forms are available at the LCSD District Leisure Services Offices. For enquiries, please call 2414 5555.

People aged 12 to 25 may also enrol in one of the three Shaolin wushu training camps to be held between July 22 and July 30 at Lady MacLehose Holiday Village, while places are still available. Enrolment forms can be obtained at LCSD District Leisure Services Offices or downloaded from the LCSD website at www.lcsd.gov.hk. For enquiries, please call the holiday village at 2792 6430.
