Renowned French organist set for Hong Kong

Hong Kong organ lovers will soon have the opportunity to hear a recital by renowned French organist Maurice Clerc. Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD), the July recital is part of the Arts Care ticket discount scheme.

Clerc has given about 800 organ recitals in more than 20 countries including 16 tours in the United States and Canada. He has played at numerous international festivals.

The Houston, Texas "Chronicle" wrote of one performance: "The Dupre, Franck and Messiaen works glistened with visceral excitement because they were so vigorously presented. Clerc showed considerable imagination in using the different colours of the organ. His improvisation ranged admirably in style and inventiveness."

Born in Lyon in 1946, Clerc obtained a First Prize for organ in 1975 at the Conservatoire National Superieur de Musique de Paris. He then studied organ with Gaston Litaize and improvisation under Pierre Cochereau. In 1977, he won the Prize for Improvisation at the Lyon International Competition.

In 1972, Clerc was appointed Titular Organist at the St Benigne's Cathedral in Dijon. He also teaches at the Conservatoire National de Region in Dijon and the Dijon University. Clerc has made numerous recordings dedicated to Bach and other German baroque composers. A specialist in French organ music of the 19th and 20th centuries, he is known for his recordings of major works of composers Franck, Vierne, Dupre, Fleury, Langlais and more recently Cochereau.

Clerc's Hong Kong performance will include Bach's "Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, BMV565", Debussy's "Ballet of Little Suite" and Vierne's "Allegro of Symphony No 2".

"Organ Recital by Maurice Clerc" will be staged at 8pm on July 19 (Saturday) at the Concert Hall, Hong Kong Cultural Centre. Tickets priced at $120, $80, $50 are now available at all URBTIX outlets. Patrons can enjoy a special offer of free choices from any of the Arts Care programmes: 20% discount for each purchase of four to seven tickets, or 40% discount for each purchase of eight or more tickets.
