Encore Series to feature two great stars

The Leisure and Cultural Services Department will launch this year's Encore Series in June with two superstars - pianist Krystian Zimerman and mezzo-soprano Jennifer Larmore. This is a golden opportunity for music lovers to enjoy music of a top international standard.

Zimerman will perform Brahms' Six Pieces, Op 118, Beethoven's Sonata No 31 in A-flat, Op 110, Chopin's Impromptu No 2 in F-sharp, Op 36 and Piano Sonata No 3 in B Minor, Op 58. Zimerman learned piano in Katowice, Poland, and later developed his skills through a relationship with the Steinway Company in Hamburg. During the past 10 seasons he has toured, playing his own piano.

Larmore will perform such opera arias as Rossini's Eccomi Alfine in Babilonia (from Semiramide), Mozart's Voi, Che Sapete (from The Marriage of Figaro) and Bizet's Habanera and Gypsy Song (from Carmen). Her operatic debut in 1986 as Sesto in Mozart's La Clemenza di Tito in France marked the start of a brilliant international career in which operas of Rossini, Bellini, Mozart and Handel have come to figure prominently. As a champion of the music of Handel, she has triumphed in the title role in Giulio Cesare and her definitive recording of this work was selected to receive the Gramophone Award for Best Baroque Opera of the Year. She was also featured in the closing ceremonies of the 1996 Olympic Games.

Piano Recital by Krystian Zimerman will start at 8pm on June 13 (Friday) with tickets priced at $480, $380, $280 and $180. Vocal Recital by Jennifer Larmore (Mezzo-soprano) will start at 8pm on June 24 (Tuesday) with tickets priced at $400, $300, $200 and $100. Both recitals will be staged at the Concert Hall, Hong Kong Cultural Centre.

Tickets are now available at all URBTIX outlets. Half-price concessions will be granted to senior citizens, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients (limited tickets for students and CSSA recipients available on a first-come-first-served basis). There is a 10% discount for Friends of LCSD performing venues.

A special 10% discount will be offered for each purchase of standard tickets for two Encore Series concerts: Piano Recital by Krystian Zimerman and Vocal Recital by Jennifer Larmore (Mezzo-soprano).
