Youth performers from Beijing academy to showcase folk dances


Members of the Youth Dance Company of the Beijing Dance Academy will perform folk dances at the Yuen Long Theatre on May 3 (Saturday) and Tsuen Wan Town Hall on May 4 (Sunday).

The Chinese Folk Dance Showcase performances, both at 8pm, will feature pieces from nationwide competitions, such as the Peacock Award, the Taoli Cup and the Lotus Award.

Hailed as "the cradle of dancers", Beijing Dance Academy is the only tertiary professional dance academy on the Mainland. It has groomed numerous dancers to become award-winners in various national and international competitions. The academy has performed in the United States, Germany, Canada, the Philippines, India, Syria, Egypt, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Macau.

The Youth Dance Company is comprised of teachers and students from the Performing Department of the academy. They have participated in many national cultural performances and received various awards including the Gold and Silver Awards in the Korea International Dance Festival.

The works, which are derived from various Mainland tribes such as Han, Tibetan, Mongolian, Uygur, Korean, Dai, Miao, Wa, Jinpo and Yi, include Young Man, Sixian, Cherry Blossoms (Yi Tribe), Expecting (female solo dance), Fragrant Yak Butter (Tibetan), Hunt, Skip, Whirl (Jingpo Tribe), Miao Girls (Miao Tribe), Old Companions (Han), The Black River (Wa Tribe), Love in the Mountains and the Wild (Yi Tribe), The Flying Peacock (Dai Tribe), The East is Red (Han), Sword Dance of the Divine (Korean, at May 3 performance only), The Mongolian and Mother's Wrap-around (Mongolian, at May 4 performance only).

Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, tickets priced at $130, $100 and $70 are now available at all URBTIX outlets. Half-price concessions will be granted to senior citizens, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients (Limited student and CSSA tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis). A 10% discount is available for Friends of LCSD performing venues as well.
