Hong Kong Art Biennial Exhibition 2003 starts inviting entries

**********************************************************

"Hong Kong Art Biennial Exhibition 2003", one of the largest open art competitions of its kind presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department and organised by the Hong Kong Museum of Art (Museum of Art), is now inviting entries. Being held for the 14th year, the competition aims to encourage more artistic creation, participation and exchange among artists, enhance the public appreciation of art, and promote Hong Kong's status in the international context.

Entries of the competition may be in any artistic style or medium, and of any form. However, to facilitate judging and the preliminary selection of entries for assessment, every entrant must specify the entry into one of the following categories: Chinese painting, Chinese calligraphy and seal carving, painting, print, sculpture, ceramics, photography, video art and digital art, installation and others.

Entrants should be residing in Hong Kong and possess a Hong Kong Identity Card. They can submit, in his or her personal capacity, a maximum of three entries but only two entries, the maximum, will be selected. Moreover, every work submitted should be original creation completed not more than two years from the date of entry.

Two rounds of judging will be conducted. In the Preliminary Selection, submission may be in form of slides. But for video art and digital animation, submission may be in video tape, VCD, DVD or CD-Rom format. For installation work, a description of work should be submitted. Selected entrants will be requested to submit the original work of the selected entry for the Final Selection.

The Preliminary Selection will be judged by a panel of local adjudicators while the Final Selection by a joint panel with local, overseas and mainland adjudicators. The list of the adjudicators will be posted up at the Lobby of Museum of Art by early May this year. The judging criteria will be based on originality, creativity and technical competence. A maximum of 10 awards will be presented, including one grand prize and a maximum of nine prizes of excellence, subject to the final decision of the adjudicating panel. The winner of the grand prize will be awarded with a cash award of HK$50,000 whereas each winner of the prizes of excellence will receive a cash award of HK$20,000. The final results will be announced with the list of winners posted up at the Lobby of Museum of Art by late July, and works selected will be presented at the Museum of Art in November this year.

Application form is now available at the Museum of Art, Hong Kong Heritage Museum, Art Promotion Office, Flagstaff House Museum of Tea Ware and the Museum of Art's website: http://hk.art.museum. All entries must be delivered to the Modern Art Unit on the third floor of Museum of Art, 10 Salisbury Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon between May 5 and May 30.
