Young Swimming Athletes Training Scheme invites applications

*********************************************************

Youngsters aged 8 to 12 possessing basic swimming skills are invited to enrol in the Young Swimming Athletes Training Scheme jointly organised by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) and the Hong Kong Amateur Swimming Association (HKASA).

An LCSD spokesman said, "The Young Swimming Athletes Training Scheme aims to promote young people's interest in the sport and give them systematic training. Those with potentials will be referred to the HKASA for further training."

"Outstanding trainees may have the opportunity to represent Hong Kong in international competitions."

Recruitment is in progress for young people aged between 8 and 12. Young people aged between 8 to 10 may enrol for Division A and those aged between 11 to 12 may enrol for Division B.

The training comprises ten phases organized into four stages. The fee for successful applicants is $50 per phase. The deadline for application is February 22, 2003.

Applicants have to pass screening tests before training commences. Training will be provided by experienced coaches of the HKASA at the LCSD's swimming pools. Trainees have to pass an assessment at the end of each stage before being promoted to the next stage.

Application forms and leaflets are now available at all LCSD's District Leisure Services Offices and the HKASA (Room 1003, Queen Elizabeth Stadium, 18 Oi Kwan Road, Wan Chai, Hong Kong).
