Fu Shan Public Library Opens to Provide Comprehensive Library Services

***********************************************************

The newly built Fu Shan Public Library opens today (January 17) offering a comprehensive library service to the neighbouring residents. Officiating at the opening ceremony were the Permanent Secretary for Home Affairs, Ms Shelley Lee and Chairman of the Wong Tai Sin District Council, Mr Lam Man-fai.

Located at Units 1-4, LG1, Fu Yan House, Fu Shan Estate, Po Kong Village Road, Kowloon and easily accessible by public transport, the Fu Shan Public Library is a convenient place for residents in the area to enjoy reading and self-learning.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Ms Lee said that the Hong Kong Public Libraries had an important role to play in the provision of information as well as in supporting lifelong learning and promotion of reading. Over the past decades, the public libraries had been committed to providing quality library services through expansion and improvement, and there was an increasing popularity of library services among the community.

At present, Wong Tai Sin has two district libraries, three small libraries and three mobile library stops. In response to the growing demand of the residents, the Fu Shan Public Library is provided in a bid to enhance the library services for the district.

The Fu Shan Public Library, a small library which has a floor area of about 420 square metres, is equipped with various facilities including an adult library, a children's library, a newspapers and periodicals section and an extension activities room. In addition, the Library has computer terminals for readers to gain access to the Library Catalogue, the multimedia materials, the Internet and the CD-ROMs.

The Library has an initial book stock of about 40,000 volumes of Chinese and English books, 1,400 compact discs, and over 70 titles of newspapers and periodicals for people of all ages and interests.

In addition, the Library will organise various programmes of extension activities including children's hours and book displays to promote interest in reading.

The Fu Shan Public Library opens from 10am to 7pm from Mondays to Wednesdays and Fridays, closes on 5pm on Saturdays and Sundays, and 1pm on public holidays. It closes the whole day on Thursdays. Students and members of cultural and educational organisations which are interested to have a better understanding of the Library's facilities and services are welcome to contact the Library for group visits.
