The newly-built Fanling Public Library, which replaces the existing small library at Cheung Wah Estate, is available for public use from today (January 6).

The new Fanling Public Library is a district library with better library services in size, book stock, facilities, and is a convenient location for residents of Fanling to enjoy reading and self-learning.

Located at 2/F, 9 Wo Mun Street, Fanling, the new Library occupies an area of 2 200 square meters, which is nearly eleven times the size of the old one. Apart from having an adult library, a children's library, a quick reference section and a newspapers and periodicals section, the Library is also equipped with a multimedia library, a computer and information centre, an extension activities room and a students' study room. Moreover, a coffee corner is set up at the Library for readers to take a break.

The Fanling Public Library has a rich collection of updated reference materials covering a wide range of disciplines. In addition to an initial book stock of some 120 000 volumes of Chinese and English books, 7 000 compact discs, CD-ROMs and audio cassette tapes and 4 400 volumes of quick reference books are available.

Moreover, the public may access to more than 150 titles of local and overseas newspapers and periodicals in the newspapers and periodicals section. Also, about 6 000 audio cassette tapes, compact discs, video cassette tapes, video discs, video compact discs and CD-ROMs are housed to satisfy the public's needs.

In order to cope with the increasing demand for self-learning, the Library has 30 computer terminals for readers to gain access to the multimedia materials, the Internet and the CD-ROM search facilities. Eleven Online Public Access Catalogue terminals are also installed.

The Library will also organise extension activities from children's hours to interest clubs and reading programme activities and book displays to promote interest in reading.

The Fanling Public Library opens from 9 am to 8 pm from Mondays to Wednesdays and Fridays, closes on 7 pm on Saturdays, and 5 pm on Sundays and public holidays. The Library closes on Thursdays. The Students' Study Room opens till 10 pm from Mondays to Wednesdays and Fridays and follows the opening hours of public libraries' Students' Study Room during the other days. Students and members of cultural and educational organisations which are interested to have a better understanding of the Library's facilities and services are welcome to contact the Library for group visits.
