Local pianist Carol Yu will give a recital in February.

Yu, who was hailed by The Times (UK) for "excellent, positive work at the piano", will play Scarlatti's "Sonata in C Minor, K11" and "Sonata in A, K322", Schumann's "Fantasy in C, Op. 17", Chopin's "Mazurka in A-flat, Op. 59, No. 2", "Nocturne in D-flat, Op. 27, No. 2", "Barcarolle in F-sharp, Op. 60" and "Ballade in F Minor, Op. 52".

Carol Yu studied piano with Hamish Milne, Philip Fowke and Shiu Yuen Shun in her early years. Her artistic style was further influenced by the Russian school through her studies with renowned Russian masters, including Viktor Merzhanov, Irina Zaritskaya and Andrzej Esterhazy.

A recipient of prestigious scholarships from the Countess of Munster Musical Trust and the Hong Kong Jockey Club Music & Dance Fund, Yu graduated from the Royal Academy of Music in London with Bachelors and Masters degrees with first class honours. She further obtained a Master of Arts in Performance from the Staatliche Hochschule fur Musik in Trossingen (Germany).

Her performing career has taken her to major concert halls in the UK, Austria, Germany, Russia, Czech Republic, Japan, China, Malaysia and Brunei. She was the artistic director of a concert in Shanghai in celebration of the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

As a concerto soloist, she has collaborated with the Malaysia National Symphony Orchestra, the Hong Kong Sinfonietta and the City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong. She is also a keen performer of chamber music and has worked with many instrumentalists abroad.

A dedicated educator, Yu is on the piano faculty of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Baptist University and The Hong Kong Institute of Education. She frequently gives lectures and takes part in master classes in Japan, Malaysia, China and Hong Kong, has adjudicated in numerous competitions, and has presented papers at the World Conference of the International Society of Music Education and Asia Pacific Symposium on Music Education Research.
