Spend time with African violet exhibition for a tranquil Lunar New Year
**************************************************

Are you busy with loads of gatherings during the Lunar Near Year holidays? Have you ever thought of any alternatives other than traditional activities? This year, flower lovers will have a good place to go: the thematic exhibition on the African violet being held at the Forsgate Conservatory of Hong Kong Park under the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD), where you can enjoy a tranquil springtime visit.

The African violet is well-known for its elegance and virtuousness. At the thematic exhibition, more than 300 pots of African violet are on display featuring a variety of species, including some very special species. They are classified in terms of the flower type such as chimera, fringed, two-tone, fantasy, double; or in terms of the leaf type such as pointed, variegated and wavy, all showing off their natural beauty in the midst of the bright green.

The African violet, also known as Saintpaulia ionantha, has many varieties with flowers blooming all year round in a favourable growing environment. Its long blossom, small size and easy propagation make it a popular indoor ornamental plant.

Besides displaying a rich variety of special species, the exhibition also showcases the growth habits of the African violet and the planting skills needed, including the optimum temperature for planting, light, planting soil, fertilising, watering methods, propagation ways and pest control, through display panels with vivid textual and pictorial illustrations. It is certainly an event that flower lovers should not miss.

The exhibition is now open and free to the public from 9am to 5pm daily until March 31, including the Lunar New Year holidays, at the Forsgate Conservatory of Hong Kong Park, Cotton Tree Drive, Central. Members of the public are welcome to pay a visit amid their various New Year activities. For details of the exhibition, please browse the LCSD website (www.lcsd.gov.hk/parks/hkp/en/whatsnew_7jan2013.php ) or call 2521 5068.
