Spectacular firework displays during the festive holidays often bring joy and happiness to the audience. In celebration of the 15th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, the Hong Kong Youth Chinese Orchestra (HKYCO) will perform its annual concert including the song "Sparkling Fireworks" commissioned by Chan Ning-chi. The concert will take place during the Christmas holidays.

The concert will feature a variety of Chinese music, sharing the festive happiness with the audience and creating a joyful atmosphere.

Organised by the Music Office of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the HKYCO's "Sparkling Fireworks" annual concert will be held in the Concert Hall of Hong Kong City Hall at 8pm on December 29 (Saturday), under the batons of the Music Office conductors Tsui Ying-fai and Kwok Kin-ming.

In addition to the enthusiastic and colourful rhythms of "Sparkling Fireworks", the HKYCO will also perform the gehu concerto "Ga Da Mei Lin", alongside guest gehu soloist Tung Hiu-lo. Other pieces include "Capriccio: Higher and Higher", based on the theme music of the TV series "Below the Lion Rock"; the amusing five movements of "Insect World", each with its own unique colour and character; the lively "Sprinting Forward"; and "Hearing the Wind Singing under the Moonlight", featuring plucked string instruments.

Established in 1978, the HKYCO has about 90 members. The orchestra has taken part in numerous local performances and major festivals, including the 47th National Day Celebration Concert, the 1997 Reunification Spectacular and the Music of the Dragons concert in 2002. In 2000 and 2007, it performed during exchange programmes in Beijing, Xian, Nanjing, Wuxi and Jiangyin. In September 2011, the orchestra embarked on its premiere tour to Taiwan and received high acclaim for its performance at the Contemporary Chinese Orchestra Festival.

Tickets priced at $80, $60 and $40 for the concert are now available at all URBTIX outlets. Half-price concessions are available for full-time students, senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and their minders, and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients.
