German girls' choir to perform in Hong Kong next month

The Leisure and Cultural Services Department will next month (October) present two concerts by MadchenChor Hannover from Germany, the winner of the "Deutscher Chorwettbewerb" (German Choral Competition).

MadchenChor Hannover won the competition in 2006 with the highest number of points ever awarded. Hannover's "Neue Press" reported: "the choir won resounding applause with their presentation of a few numbers in traditional Baroque style with rich, diverse interpretations."

Under the baton of conductor Gudrun Schrofel, the choir will bring Hong Kong audiences a stylish repertoire, including the choral works of Mozart, Brahms, Schumann, Mendelssohn, and some contemporary, lighter music.

The MadchenChor Hannover, founded in 1952, is one of the best-known youth choirs in Germany. The choir has earned international acclaim by winning prizes at numerous competitions like the Deutscher Chorwettbewerb, the Internationaler ChorWettbewerb in Arezzo, Tolosa, the International Chamber Choir Competition in Marktobedorf, and the Brahms-Wettbewerb in Hamburg. They have also made concert appearances in Europe, Japan, South America, the USA, Canada and Israel.

The choir has a broad repertoire focusing on contemporary choral works. It has contributed to the development of the repertoire for youth and women's choirs by commissioning new works.

The concerts will be at 8pm on October 18 and 19 (Saturday and Sunday) at the Auditorium, Sha Tin Town Hall and Tsuen Wan Town Hall respectively. Tickets priced at $100, $150 and $200 are now available at all URBTIX outlets. Half-price concessions will be granted to senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients. (Limited tickets for CSSA recipients are available on a first-come, first-served basis.)
